Safe use of Workshop Machinery

Course Aim
This course is designed to provide candidates with an understanding of the requirements of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, machinery safety requirements and associated safe systems of work.
The first part of the course will be classroom based, while the second part of the course will be based in the client’s workshops where candidates will demonstrate the necessary competence to set up, use, inspect and maintain the machinery.

Who Should Attend
The course is particularly suitable for candidates who are experienced users of woodworking and engineering workshop machinery, but require formal training in order to demonstrate that they have the necessary competence (experience, knowledge and training) for compliance with health & safety regulations.

Content of Course
The course includes:

  • Legislation relating to workshop machinery - HASAWA 1974, PUWER 1998
  • Mechanical and non-mechanical machinery hazards
  • Importance of machinery risk assessments
  • Optional instruction on how to undertake machinery risk assessments
  • Guards, interlocks and other safety features
  • Safe working practices
  • COSHH relating to machine use
  • Selection and use of personal protective equipment
  • Inspection & maintenance requirements
  • Extraction systems (as applicable)
  • Inspection & maintenance of work equipment
  • Practical demonstration by operator on safe set up, use, inspection and maintenance of workshop machinery

Objectives
By the end of the course, candidates will have received the necessary health and safety knowledge and training to supplement their practical experience in the safe use and maintenance of workshop machinery.

Certificates
A certificate of competence is provided for all candidates that go through the course.

Duration of Course
Minimum of 3 hours, depending upon number and type of machines, and whether training in machinery risk assessment is required
