SPA Safety Passport – Day 2 – Construction Sector
The safety passport is a nationally recognised industry accredited
scheme; designed to provide candidates with general health and safety
awareness to enable them to work safely on site. Candidates must
have attended the Core Day training session prior to attending this
course. The course provides the necessary training in preparation
for undertaking the CITB-Construction Skills Health & Safety
Test.
The course is designed for managers; supervisors and operatives
who need to demonstrate that they have the required competence for
working on construction sites.
- Module 1 – Organising for Safety
Health & safety legislation; responsibilities; lines of communication;
risk assessment
- Module 2 – The Workplace
Principles of safe place of work; safe behaviour; safe access
and egress; safety signs; temperature; lighting; housekeeping;
welfare facilities; slips, trips and falls; working at height
(working with ladders, fragile roosf, scaffolding and mobile scaffold
towers); excavations and confined spaces
- Module 3 – Plant and Machinery
Hand held tools; machinery; electricity; noise; workplace transport
- Module 4 - Health
Hygiene; personal protective equipment; specific health hazards
(asbestos, lead, cement; effects of sun); manual handling; musculoskeletal
disorders (hand arm vibration, whole body vibration); health surveillance;
stress
- Module 5 – Procedures
Safe systems of work, including permit to work systems; emergency
procedures; fire safety; first aid; reporting accidents and incidents
- Module 7 – Environment
Key legislation; enforcing organisations; responsibilities of
employers and employees; causes of on and off site pollution;
how to prevent pollution; emergency planning; emergency procedures;
waste minimisation and segregation; safe and secure storage
By the end of the programme; the candidate will be able to: -
- Have a basic knowledge of health and safety
- Be able to work in a safe and healthy manner and contribute
to improving health and safety on site
- Identify key hazards in their own workplace
- Understand the importance of health and safety rules and working
procedures
- Report potential health and safety problems
Candidates will be issued with a safety photocard passport (valid
for three years) as proof that they have received training.
This is a one-day course with a minimum of 6 hours tutor contact
time.
